Renovation of the facades of the Léon Jouhaux school complex in Lyon (69)

Despite renovation work and the pandemic, the Léon Jouhaux school group has never really closed. And for some time now, it has been welcoming young and old alike to completely renovated premises. The new facades of the elevation, made of CAREA Acantha (overcladding) and Ardal (vertical) cladding, are enlivened by the light and shadows cast by the foliage of the surrounding trees.

The renovation of this school, located in the heart of old Lyon, had to respect the traditional aesthetics of the district and the existing building. Contemporary architecture and volumes, combined with a historic building, ensured the perfect aesthetic integration of the site into its surroundings. This integration was facilitated by the use of LISSE VELOUTÉ, a timeless, architectural finish that is very easy to maintain, thanks to the absence of porosity in the material. Mineral Composite (very important in urban areas). The material was used in the classic way for vertical façades (on Carea Primalu frames), but also on sloping façades and as over-roofing; the technical difficulties of such a system were overcome in part thanks to the support of the CAREA design office throughout the project. The over-roofing was the subject of an Atex case b submitted by Asten, in collaboration with the Carea design office.

The result is a beautiful, inspiring and original roof. It is designed in two parts: the lower part is reserved for the kindergarten playground, which extends onto a flat roof; the upper part houses the gymnasium, which is covered by a green roof.

The installation of CAREA’s grooved Bardage Avec Ossature (BAO) system complied with the new regulations in force, and took account of the building’s technical constraints. In fact, the roof, the sloping façades and the busy site represented a real technical challenge in the rehabilitation of the site.
